Competition for starting job

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-04-28

Pierce and 2024 second-round draft pick Adonai Mitchell will compete on the outside for the No. 3 receiver role in training camp, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.

Pirece has been the starting deep threat for the Colts the last two seasons but without much production (just 32 receptions for 514 yards and two touchdowns last season). While that may have been due to poor quarterback play and a game plan that didn't throw the ball deep, but it has opened the door for a dynamic talent like Mitchell to compete for his job. Mitchell, the former Texas and Georgia receiver, dazzled at the NFL Scouting Combine (4.34-second 40-yard dash, 136-inch broad jump) following a productive end to his Longhorns career (55 catches for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns on 92 targets in 2023).

Catchless in season finale

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-01-10

Pierce failed to reel in single pass on four targets in Saturday's 23-19 loss to the Texans.

Pierce was held without a catch for the second time this season in what has been an underwhelming campaign for the 23-year-old. In 17 games, the second-year wideout finished the season with 32 receptions for 514 yards and two touchdowns. Pierce remains on his rookie contract with the Colts through the 2025 season, so the speedster will look to continue to improve and grow in his role within the Colts' passing attack. The return of Anthony Richardson (shoulder) at quarterback next season should help to make the offense more dynamic, boosting Pierce's big-play potential.

Makes sole target count

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-12-31

Pierce caught one pass for a 58-yard touchdown on one target in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Raiders.

Pierce's big-play ability downfield is nothing new, but as his target count from even this game illustrates, the Indianapolis offense just isn't built to feature regular target opportunities for Pierce. As the fastest Colts wideout it's often Pierce who's stuck with running decoy routes far downfield, which helps buy cover for Michael Pittman and Josh Downs underneath. Usually defenses take appropriate precautions to keep Pierce from getting open downfield, but on his touchdown catch from Sunday the Raiders made the mistake of leaving Pierce alone against the 5-foot-8 Amik Robertson, who had no means of defense against the 6-foot-3 Pierce. Until the Colts feature Pierce on a wider variety of routes, his game will likely remain boom-or-bust for fantasy purposes.

Quiet despite Pittman absence

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-12-24

Pierce brought in three of seven targets for 30 yards in the Colts' 29-10 loss to the Falcons on Sunday.

Despite the absence of Michael Pittman (concussion), Pierce was unable to capitalize on what tied for his highest target total of the campaign. Outside of his 3-100-1 line against the Titans in Week 13, Pierce has topped out at three receptions and 53 yards in terms of single-game highs in his 13 other contests. He could see more opportunity than usual again in Week 17 at home against the Raiders if Pittman is forced to miss that contest.

Could be more involved Sunday

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-12-24

Pierce could serve as the Colts' No. 1 receiver Sunday against the Falcons with Michael Pittman (concussion/shoulder) set to miss his first game of the season, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.

Though Boyd specifically names Pierce as the top candidate to step in as the Colts' top wideout Sunday, rookie Josh Downs has also been a regular alongside Pierce and Pittman in three-receiver sets this season and should see an expanded profile in the passing game as well. Pierce and Downs may not face much competition for looks from quarterback Gardner Minshew, as none of the team's other receivers, tight ends or running backs have proven to be high-volume targets this season. Since Week 7, only one Colts pass catcher other than Pittman, Pierce or Downs has drawn six or more targets in a game (running back Zack Moss, eight targets in Week 14).

One reception in win

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-12-18

Pierce had one reception for 13 yards on five targets in Saturday's win over Pittsburgh.

Pierce once again had high usage by playing on 65 of the offense's 67 snaps and went on 34 routes, but wasn't a huge factor in the offense. Indy's limited deep passing game has resulted in just two games where Pierce has amassed more than 50 yards receiving.

Pair of grabs in loss

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-12-10

Pierce secured two of three targets for 22 yards in the Colts' 34-14 loss to the Bengals on Sunday.

One game after posting a 100-yard tally against the Titans in an overtime win, Pierce was back to meager production. The 2022 second-round pick has posted less than 30 receiving yards in four of the last five contests, and the aforementioned Week 13 breakout versus Tennessee marks his only game with more than 53 receiving yards this season.

First 100-yard performance

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-12-03

Pierce recorded three receptions on six targets for 100 yards and one touchdown in Sunday's 31-28 overtime win over the Titans.

Pierce made the most of limited opportunity, as he opened his performance with a 36-yard touchdown to cap the Colts' first offensive possession. It took until overtime, but Pierce delivered another explosive play on a 55-yard reception to set up the game-winning score two plays later. The performance marked Pierce's first career 100-yard game and only the second time this season that he's topped 50 yards.

Four receptions in win

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-11-27

Pierce had four receptions for 27 yards on six targets in Sunday's win against Tampa Bay.

After recording just one reception for 21 yards over his last two games, Pierce was more involved against Tampa Bay. He had his most receptions in a game this season, which speaks more to his lack of production in the offense. He continues to get a heavy workload as a starting wide receiver but few receptions as Indy's main deep threat.
