The 49ers released Miller on Tuesday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.

Miller spent the offseason and a lot of training camp with the Steelers before getting waived in mid-August. He subsequently found his way to San Francisco after clearing waivers and was competing for a depth receiving role with the club. The 28-year-old was unable to do enough to climb up the ladder and is now set to look for a new opportunity if he does not get a practice squad offer.

Signs in San Francisco

The 49ers signed Miller to a contract Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Miller will get a chance to compete for an end-of-roster role in San Francisco, though Friday's exhibition matchup against the Chargers will be his last and only chance to log any preseason action. The 2018 second-round pick hasn't appear in a regular-season game since 2021, when he logged two appearances with the Texans and one with the Steelers.

Miller missed the 2022 campaign after landing on IR due to a shoulder injury during training camp. The 28-year-old hasn't played steady snaps since 2020 with the Bears when he made 49 catches on 76 targets for 485 yards and two touchdowns. He'll now work to find a new opportunity.

Returns to practice

Miller (shoulder) was spotted returning punts during Tuesday's practice, Noah Strackbein of SI.com reports.

Miller, who missed the entire 2022 season with a shoulder injury suffered in training camp, appears to be healthy again. During the upcoming campaign, Miller is slated to compete with a depth role at receiver, and his ability to contribute as a return man could be essential if he's to make the roster as a fifth or sixth option in the position group.

Remaining with the Steelers

The Steelers signed Miller (shoulder) to a one-year contract Tuesday, Teresa Varley of the team's official site reports.

Miller spent the entire 2022-23 campaign on Pittsburgh's injured reserve due to the shoulder injury he sustained during training camp. Once he's able to prove optimal health, the 28-year-old wide receiver will compete for a pass-catching role out of the slot next year alongside Diontae Johnson and George Pickens.
