Expected to compete with Jones

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-03-11

Beathard is expected to compete with Mac Jones -- who is slated to be traded to from the Patriots to the Jaguars -- to be Trevor Lawrence's top backup in 2024, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.

The report notes that Beathard is in the final year of a two-year, $4.5 million contract that he signed prior to last season. Per Jeremy Fowler of, part of the Jaguars' motivation for the deal is that Beathard has been banged up at times during his stint with the team, with Jones -- a 2021 first-rounder -- giving the team a healthy backup option (with plenty of starting experience) ahead of the coming season.

Solid season as backup

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-01-16

Beathard appeared in seven games this season and completed 40 of 53 passes for 349 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He also carried eight times for 35 yards.

The 30-year-old primarily worked in mop-up duty but saw significant action in Weeks 16 and 17 with Trevor Lawrence injured. Beathard played well in those contests, completing 28 of 39 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown, helping Jacksonville to a victory in his lone start. He's under contract for 2024 and seems likely to work as Lawrence's top backup once more.

Returning to backup role

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-01-07

Beathard will serve as the Jaguars' backup quarterback for Sunday's game against the Titans with Trevor Lawrence (shoulder/finger) active for the contest and cleared to start, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

While Lawrence missed the first game of his NFL career in Week 17 due to an AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder, Beathard stepped in to make the start and managed the game effectively in the Jaguars' 26-0 win over Carolina, completing 17 of 24 pass attempts for 178 yards with no touchdowns or turnovers. Lawrence wasn't involved in practice as anything more than a limited participant this week and still isn't fully healthy, but he'll get the green light to return to the lineup as Jacksonville looks to secure a playoff spot with a win over Tennessee. Beathard will thus move back into the No. 2 role, while Matt Barkley is inactive as Jacksonville's emergency No. 3 quarterback.

Manages game effectively in win

Beathard completed 17 of 24 passes for 178 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and rushed three times for 24 yards in the Jaguars' 26-0 win over the Panthers on Sunday.

As expected, Beathard played a game-manager role in his spot start for Trevor Lawrence (shoulder), and he carried out his assignment with plenty of success. Beathard connected with seven different targets overall and did complete a 48-yard pass to Jamal Agnew, but he otherwise unsurprisingly kept most of his pass attempts in the short-to-medium passing windows. If Lawrence can't suit up in Week 18 on the road against the Titans, Beathard will be called upon again as the Jaguars attempt to punch their playoff ticket.

Starting for Lawrence in Week 17

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-12-29

Beathard will be the Jaguars' starting quarterback Sunday against the Panthers with Trevor Lawrence (shoulder) ruled out for that contest, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Lawrence emerged from a Week 16 loss at Tampa Bay with an AC joint sprain in his right throwing shoulder, which kept him off the practice field Wednesday through Friday. Now that Lawrence won't be available Sunday, Beathard is poised for his first start since Week 17 of the 2020 season for the 49ers. In six appearances subbing in for Lawrence this season, Beathard has completed 23 of 29 passes for 171 yards and one touchdown and also rushed five times for 11 yards.

Begins Week 17 prep with first team

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-12-27

Beathard took full reps with the first-team offense at Wednesday's practice while Trevor Lawrence (shoulder) sat out the session, Michael DiRocco of reports.

Lawrence made a swift recovery from a concussion suffered Week 15 to make himself available for this past Sunday's 30-12 loss to the Buccaneers, but he missed the final 15 minutes of the game after sustaining an AC joint sprain to his throwing shoulder late in the third quarter. Beathard came off the bench for his fifth appearance of the season and directed the offense for Jacksonville's final three possessions, completing 11 of 15 pass attempts for 94 yards and a touchdown while adding six yards on one carry. On Tuesday, head coach Doug Pederson wasn't willing to speculate whether Lawrence will be able to play this Sunday against the Panthers, so the franchise signal-caller's activity in practices the next two days -- or lack thereof -- could dictate his status. Beathard would draw the Week 17 start if Lawrence can't go, while the newly signed Matt Barkley would serve as the backup quarterback.

Remains backup for Week 14

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-12-10

Beathard will serve as the backup quarterback in Sunday's game against the Browns with Trevor Lawrence (ankle) listed active for the contest and having been cleared to start, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Just six days after suffering what was reported as a right high-ankle sprain in Monday's 34-31 overtime loss to the Bengals, Lawrence will be able to return to the lineup without having to miss a game, even though his injury typically entails a multi-week recovery. The Jaguars were still concerned enough about Lawrence's health to sign another quarterback (Nathan Rourke) to the active roster Saturday, but Rourke will be a healthy inactive Sunday while Beathard sticks in the No. 2 role. While coming on in relief of Lawrence against the Bengals, Beathard completed nine of 10 pass attempts for 63 yards to go with seven yards on his lone carry.

Available for Week 14 if needed

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-12-08

Beathard (shoulder) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Browns, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Beathard's injury to his non-throwing shoulder won't hamper his availability, but the backup may not be needed Sunday in Cleveland. Trevor Lawrence (ankle, questionable) has looked better than anticipated in practice after being replaced by Beathard in the fourth quarter of Monday's loss to the Bengals, and if Lawrence is healthy enough to play, Beathard would be relegated to the bench.

Still limited Thursday

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-12-07

Beathard (left shoulder) remained limited at practice Thursday.

Meanwhile, Jacksonville's franchise QB Trevor Lawrence, who is dealing with a high-ankle sprain, was also limited Thursday after missing Wednesday's session. Friday's injury report will add further context with regard to the duo's status for Sunday's game against the Browns, but Lawrence's ability to practice in a limited capacity Thursday has brightened the prospects of him potentially being able to play this weekend.
