Traded to Detroit

The Buccaneers are trading Davis to the Lions, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Detroit gets an experienced starter to address the obvious weak point of an otherwise stellar roster. The Bucs probably won't get much in return; for them the appeal largely comes from avoiding more than $14 million in non-guaranteed payments scheduled for Davis in 2024 (after the recent re-signings of QB Baker Mayfield and WR Mike Evans). The 27-year-old Davis has played between 10 and 14 games each season since the Bucs took him in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, starting 75 of his 76 regular-season appearances while averaging 54 tackles, 12.2 pass defenses, 1.5 interceptions, 0.5 forced fumbles and 0.7 fumble recoveries per season.

Fights through injuries in '23

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-02-03

Davis tallied 52 tackles (40 solo), two interceptions and an additional seven defensed passes over 12 regular-season games in 2023, adding 11 tackles (10 solo) and two defensed passes in two postseason contests.

Davis was mostly effective when he was out there, but toe, hip and groin injuries, along with a concussion, limited him to the second-fewest games of his career. The veteran cornerback did allow a stingy 53.3 percent completion rate on the 60 attempts he faced in primary coverage, and his pair of picks actually qualified as the second most of his six-year career. Davis now heads into the final year of the three-year, $44.5 million contract he signed prior to the 2022 campaign, and it remains to be seen if the Buccaneers will be interested in discussing an extension this offseason.

Will return Sunday

Davis (concussion) is active Sunday against the Panthers.

Davis' ability to suit up shouldn't come as a surprise after he cleared the league's concussion protocols Saturday. His ability to take the field should be good news for Tampa Bay's secondary.

Clears protocol

Davis (concussion) cleared concussion protocol Saturday but is still listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's game against the Panthers, Jenna Laine of reports.

The veteran cornerback has a much better chance of suiting up in Week 18 now that he's officially cleared concussion protocol, despite still being listed as questionable. Christian Izien is expected to shoulder an increased workload in the Buccaneers' secondary if Davis were to miss the team's regular season finale.

Questionable to play at Carolina

Davis (concussion) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Carolina.

Davis was a full participant at practice Thursday and Friday, but it's possible there are still outstanding steps for him to clear league concussion protocol. If he can't suit up in Week 18, Cristian Izien could see more snaps as a result.

Practices in full

Davis (concussion) was a full participant in Thursday's practice.

The 27-year-old cornerback missed the Buccaneers' Week 17 loss to the Saints with a concussion, and after an estimated limited practice session Wednesday, he upgraded to a full workload Thursday. Head coach Todd Bowles told reporters Thursday that Davis still hasn't fully cleared concussion protocol just yet, meaning the sixth-year pro could very well carry an injury designation into the weekend.

Still working through injury

Davis remains in concussion protocols Wednesday, according to head coach Todd Bowles, Brianna Dix of the Buccaneers' official site reports.

Davis suffered the concussion Week 16 against Jacksonville and was unable to practice during Week 17 prep before missing Sunday's loss to the Saints. It was reported Monday by Greg Auman of Fox Sports that Davis was trending in the right direction to play Week 18 against the Panthers; however, his continued presence in protocols will keep him questionable for the matchup for now.

Could return Week 18

Davis (concussion) has a chance to play Sunday against the Panthers, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports.

Davis missed the team's Week 17 loss to the Saints, but he's trending in the right direction through the league's protocols to give him a chance to return in the regular-season finale. The Auburn product's ability to play in a pivotal game against Carolina would be good news for the Buccaneers, as a win would guarantee them the AFC South division and a spot in the playoffs.

Won't play vs. Saints

Davis (concussion) is out for Sunday's game versus the Saints, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports.

Davis will sit out for the fifth time this season in Week 17, this time due to a concussion. In his absence, Jamel Dean and Christian Izien will likely operate as Tampa Bay's top two corners Sunday.
