Open to backup job
Latest Headline: Published 2023-05-14
Wentz has been working out in Los Angeles and is open to taking a backup role, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Wentz averaged less than 7.0 yards per pass attempt and 220 passing yards per game each of the past three seasons wile starting for three different teams. He's reportedly received interest from NFL teams -- presumably for backup jobs 00 since Washington released him in February. The 30-year-old is unlikely to find a chance to compete for a starting job but might be hoping injuries open that up at some point before Week 1 if he's patient.

Released by Washington
Latest Headline: Published 2023-02-27
The Commanders released Wentz on Monday.
As expected, Wentz has been let go to save over $26 million in cap space before his roster bonus triggered March 17. The veteran quarterback was traded to Washington ahead of the 2022 campaign, but after two solid outings to start the season, he completed just 60.8 percent of his passes over his next six appearances and threw six interceptions to just four touchdowns during that stretch. There's plenty of teams in need of a starting quarterback, but Wentz's recent track record may force him to settle for a backup gig in 2023. If he joins a new team this summer, it'll mark his fourth squad in as many years.
Facing uncertain future
Latest Headline: Published 2023-01-11
Commanders general manager Martin Mayhew declined to give a direct answer when asked Tuesday if Wentz will be back with the team in 2023, Scott Abraham of 7 News Washington reports.
Wentz presumably needs to accept a pay cut to have any chance at returning, as he's scheduled for a non-guaranteed $20 million base salary in 2023 and has a $5 million roster bonus due March 17, per Spotrac.com. Having traded for Wentz last offseason, the Commanders can get out of his contract without any dead-cap charge after he went 2-5 as a starter and finished in the bottom five among qualified passers for yards per attempt (6.0), interception rate (3.3 percent), passer rating (80.2) and QBR (32.7). It was a bad enough season that he may only be in the mix for backup jobs in 2023.
Inactive Sunday
Latest Headline: Published 2023-01-08
Wentz is inactive for Sunday's season finale against the Cowboys.
While Wentz is inactive, rookie Sam Howell is slated to start Sunday's contest, with Taylor Heinicke in line to serve as the team's No. 2 QB in Week 18.
Likely to sit out Sunday
Latest Headline: Published 2023-01-04
Wentz is likely to be a healthy inactive for Sunday's game against the Cowboys with the Commanders expected to proceed with Sam Howell and Taylor Heinicke as their available quarterbacks, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
After impressing in relief of a struggling Heinicke in the Commanders' Week 16 loss to the 49ers, Wentz reclaimed the starting gig Week 17. While making his first start since Week 6, Wentz fared poorly in a 24-10 loss to the Browns, completing just 16 of 28 attempts for 143 yards and three interceptions while adding a touchdown on the ground as the 7-8-1 Commanders saw their playoff hopes disappear. With little at stake in the finale, head coach Ron Rivera appears prepared to get his first glimpse at Howell, who has yet to make his NFL debut. Wentz, meanwhile, may have played his last snap for the Commanders. He's under contract through 2024 but has no guaranteed money on his deal beyond the 2022 season, making him a possible cut candidate this offseason.
Three picks in loss

Wentz completed 16 of 28 passes for 143 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in Sunday's 24-10 loss to the Browns. He added three rushes for seven yards and a touchdown.
Wentz returned to a starting role for the first time since Week 6 and did not fare well. He struggled to get the Commanders' offense moving and concluded two of the team's first three offensive possessions with an interception. Things improved slightly from there, and the highlight of Wentz's game came on a one-yard touchdown rush just before halftime. Even so, Wentz managed only 5.1 yards per attempt and made several impactful mistakes, leaving the door open for Taylor Heinicke to return as the starter in Week 18, per Ben Standig of The Athletic.
