Future uncertain after lone start

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-01-15

Wentz finished the 2023 regular season completing 17 of 24 pass attempts for 163 yards, two touchdowns and one interception and added 17 carries for 56 yards and a touchdown.

After Matthew Stafford went down with a thumb injury and missed part of Week 8 and all of Week 9, Brett Rypien came in and performed poorly (18-of-38 for 172 yards and an interception), prompting the Rams to take a chance on Wentz. For his part, the former No. 2 overall pick in 2016 proved up to the task against the 49ers in Week 18, taking the reigns and helping Puka Nacua set the all-time rookie reception and receiving yard marks while turning in nearly as many rushing attempts in one game as he had in eight games with the Commanders in 2022. Wentz still wants to be a starting quarterback heading into his age-31 campaign, and the unrestricted free agent might get one more chance to prove he can helm an offense with the cavalcade of ineffective and injured quarterbacks that littered the NFL landscape in 2023. If that doesn't work out, a return to the Rams to be a quality backup behind Stafford seems like a distinct possibility.

Scores three TDs in spot-start

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-01-07

Wentz completed 17 of 24 pass attempts for 163 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while adding 56 yards and a rushing touchdown on 17 carries in Sunday's 21-20 win over San Francisco.

Wentz made his first start of the season in Week 18 with starter Matthew Stafford resting for the playoff-bound Rams. The veteran backup generated three touchdowns while leading his team to victory Sunday. Wentz will continue backing up Stafford for as long as Los Angeles' playoff run lasts before becoming an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason.

Gets starting nod for season finale

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-01-03

Wentz will start Sunday's regular-season finale against the 49ers, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Matthew Stafford will get a week off for the Rams, who are locked into a wild-card spot in the NFC. Wentz will make his first start since Week 17 of the 2022 season, when he was with Washington. It will be the 93rd start of the 31-year-old quarterback's career, and Wentz owns a 151:66 career TD:INT while having previously played for the Eagles, Colts and Commanders.

Officially on active roster

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-11-08

The Rams officially signed Wentz to their active roster Wednesday, Stu Jackson of the team's official site reports.

After a rollicking Tuesday in which the Rams waived Brett Rypien and cut Dresser Winn from the practice squad, it also was reported that Wentz was in line to sign with the team. It wasn't clear until one day later that Wentz in fact was joining the active roster to back up Matthew Stafford moving forward. Rypien's uninspiring performance this past Sunday at Green Bay may have been the impetus, and Wentz now seems destined to serve as the No. 2 QB after L.A.'s Week 10 bye, considering coach Sean McVay expressed confidence Monday in Stafford's ability to play in the team's next outing Sunday, Nov. 19 against the Seahawks, per Jackson. Such an outcome isn't guaranteed, though, so Wentz isn't far away from his first game action since Week 17 of last season.

Finds new home in Los Angeles

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-11-07

The Rams signed Wentz on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Wentz is expected to slide in as Matthew Stafford's backup in Los Angeles. With Stafford missing part of Week 8 and then the entirety of Week 9 with a thumb injury, the Rams couldn't move the ball with Brett Rypien under center. Rypien completed just 47.4 percent of his throws for 172 yards at 4.5 yards per attempt with no touchdowns. The Rams now have their Week 10 bye to get Wentz up to speed on the playbook in the event Stafford isn't ready to return for Week 11 against the Seahawks.

Open to backup job

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-05-14

Wentz has been working out in Los Angeles and is open to taking a backup role, Jeremy Fowler of reports.

Wentz averaged less than 7.0 yards per pass attempt and 220 passing yards per game each of the past three seasons wile starting for three different teams. He's reportedly received interest from NFL teams -- presumably for backup jobs -- since Washington released him in February. The 30-year-old is unlikely to find a chance to compete for a starting job but might be hoping injuries open that up at some point before Week 1 if he's patient.

Released by Washington

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-02-27

The Commanders released Wentz on Monday.

As expected, Wentz has been let go to save over $26 million in cap space before his roster bonus triggered March 17. The veteran quarterback was traded to Washington ahead of the 2022 campaign, but after two solid outings to start the season, he completed just 60.8 percent of his passes over his next six appearances and threw six interceptions to just four touchdowns during that stretch. There's plenty of teams in need of a starting quarterback, but Wentz's recent track record may force him to settle for a backup gig in 2023. If he joins a new team this summer, it'll mark his fourth squad in as many years.

Facing uncertain future

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-01-11

Commanders general manager Martin Mayhew declined to give a direct answer when asked Tuesday if Wentz will be back with the team in 2023, Scott Abraham of 7 News Washington reports.

Wentz presumably needs to accept a pay cut to have any chance at returning, as he's scheduled for a non-guaranteed $20 million base salary in 2023 and has a $5 million roster bonus due March 17, per Having traded for Wentz last offseason, the Commanders can get out of his contract without any dead-cap charge after he went 2-5 as a starter and finished in the bottom five among qualified passers for yards per attempt (6.0), interception rate (3.3 percent), passer rating (80.2) and QBR (32.7). It was a bad enough season that he may only be in the mix for backup jobs in 2023.

Inactive Sunday

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-01-08

Wentz is inactive for Sunday's season finale against the Cowboys.

While Wentz is inactive, rookie Sam Howell is slated to start Sunday's contest, with Taylor Heinicke in line to serve as the team's No. 2 QB in Week 18.
