Bucs running it back on offense

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-03-12

Godwin will benefit from offensive stability with Tampa Bay slated to re-sign quarterback Baker Mayfield to a three-year, $100 million contract and Mike Evans having returned via a two-year, $52 million contract, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports.

Godwin at one point looked like he'd have to adapt to another change under center while potentially also having to line up with Evans elsewhere for the first time in his career, but the Buccaneers' early offseason moves have instead secured impressive offensive stability. The retention of both Mayfield and Evans should provide fantasy managers real confidence that Godwin's involvement on offense will remain effective and core to Tampa Bay's game plan, especially with new offensive coordinator Liam Coen having stated that he envisions the 28-year-old wideout moving back to the slot. Godwin has put together three consecutive 1,000-yard receiving campaigns, and it's possible the passing game could take a real step forward in 2024 with Mayfield more comfortable Year 2 under center.

Likely returning to slot

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-02-06

New Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen said Tuesday that he anticipates moving Godwin back inside to the slot, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Godwin took 32 percent of his snaps from the slot in 2023, down from 60 percent the previous year and 53 percent in 2021. His volume didn't suffer too much (130 targets), but his catch rate plunged to 63.8 percent after four straight years above 71 percent, and he finished with his lowest per-game averages for receptions (4.9) and receiving yards (60.2) since 2018 (which was also the last time his slot rate dipped below 49 percent). While perfectly capable on the perimeter, Godwin is probably at his best inside and tends to earn more targets when he's there. The shift to more outside work last season apparently stemmed from the Bucs' belief that it might help keep him healthy, and while Godwin did in fact play every game for the first time since 2017-18, he's nonetheless expected to man the slot more often with the team shifting from Dave Canales to Coen as offensive coordinator. It sounds like a good thing for his fantasy value, especially given the likelihood that Godwin also gets a lot of playing time in two-wide formations, unlike many other slot guys.

Four receptions in playoff defeat

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-01-21

Godwin brought in four of eight targets for 40 yards in the Buccaneers' 31-23 divisional-round loss to the Lions on Sunday.

The veteran wideout couldn't shake loose for any big gains against the Lions' inconsistent secondary, but he still finished third in receptions and receiving yards while tying for second in targets. Godwin's final line was fairly representative of his final month's worth of games, as he topped out at six receptions and 81 yards in terms of single-game highs over the last four contests. However, Godwin did post an impressive 83-1,024-2 line across 17 regular-season contests, but he is slated to draw a robust $20 million base salary and count $27.5 million overall against the team's cap in 2024.

Clear for divisional round

Godwin (knee/personal) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's divisional-round game at Detroit.

The Buccaneers kept close tabs on Godwin's on-field work this week, holding him out of Wednesday's walkthrough before capping his reps at Thursday's walkthrough due to a knee injury. He then missed practice entirely Friday because of a personal issue, but neither concern will impact his availability for the Buccaneers' second contest of this postseason. Back in Week 6, Godwin hauled in six of seven targets for 77 yards against the Lions in a 20-6 loss.

Limited in Thursday's walkthrough

Godwin (knee) was limited at Thursday's walkthrough.

Godwin had practice restrictions due to a knee issue back in Weeks 15 and 16, and his day off last Friday also was attributed to a knee concern. At Wednesday's walkthrough, he logged no activity for the same reason, but his ability to get back on the field one day later seems to imply he's trending in the right direction ahead of Sunday's divisional-round game at Detroit. In the end, Friday's practice report will unveil whether or not Godwin enters the weekend with a designation.

Listed as 'DNP' in walk-through

Godwin (knee) was listed as a non-participant in Wednesday's walk-through practice, Brianna Dix of the Buccaneers' official site reports.

During the Buccaneers' 32-9 wild-card win over the Eagles on Monday night, Godwin logged 51 of a possible 70 snaps on offense en route to catching four of his five targets for 45 yards and a touchdown. Now that the wideout has logged a 'DNP' to start the practice week, however, his status is worth monitoring ahead of Sunday's divisional round playoff game against the Lions.

Caps win with touchdown

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-01-15

Godwin brought in four of five targets for 45 yards and a touchdown in the Buccaneers' 32-9 wild-card win over the Eagles on Monday night.

Godwin had a relatively quiet night until the latter portion of the fourth quarter, when he put the Buccaneers' final points of the night on the board with a 23-yard touchdown grab. Godwin now has at least four receptions in five of the last six games and has scored twice in the last three, giving him a solid fantasy floor heading into a Sunday afternoon divisional-round battle against the Lions that could feature plenty of passing.

Paces pass catchers in win

Godwin brought in six of seven targets for 51 yards and rushed once for four yards in the Buccaneers' 9-0 win over the Panthers on Sunday.

Godwin led the Buccaneers in receptions and receiving yards on a quiet day for the air attack. The veteran wideout finished the regular season on a high note, recording at least six receptions in three of the last four games and posting over 50 receiving yards in each of the final five contests of the regular season. Godwin also eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the third straight campaign and fourth time in the last five years with Sunday's production, and he'll draw a favorable matchup to open the postseason against the Eagles' shaky secondary in a home wild-card matchup next weekend.

Scores impressive TD in loss

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-12-31

Godwin brought in three of five targets for 81 yards and a touchdown in the Buccaneers' 23-13 loss to the Saints on Sunday.

Godwin checked in second in receiving yards for the Bucs on the afternoon, getting to that total with an impressive 47-yard touchdown grab with 1:37 remaining. Godwin now has at least 78 receiving yards in three straight contests, and with Sunday's production, he heads into the Week 18 regular-season finale just 27 yards short of his third consecutive 1,000-yard season.
