Blough signed with the Lions' practice squad on Thursday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Blough was let go by the Cardinals on Tuesday after losing out to Joshua Dobbs and Clayton Tune. He'll no operate on the Lions' practice squad and prepare for a call-up should Jared Goff or backup Teddy Bridgewater miss time.

Cut by Arizona

Blough was cut by the Cardinals on Tuesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.

The quarterback re-signed with the team in April after starting two games at the end of last season in place of the injured Kyler Murray. Blough has seven career starts and an 0-7 record in four seasons with four different teams.

Could compete for backup job

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-04-03

Blough should get a chance to compete with Colt McCoy (undisclosed) for the Cardinals' backup quarterback role, which takes on added importance with Kyler Murray rehabbing from an ACL tear, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.

McCoy is also recovering from an unspecified surgery, potentially opening the door for Blough to be the first-team quarterback when offseason practices begin. McCoy's injury wasn't nearly as serious as Murray's, so the 36-year-old should be ready for training camp even if he misses part or all of OTAs. Blough is 0-7 as a starter in his NFL career, completing only 57 percent of his pass attempts while throwing more interceptions (nine) than touchdowns (six), and the Cardinals re-signed him in March on a one-year, $1.23 million contract that includes only $76,250 guaranteed.

Back in Arizona

The Cardinals and Blough (head) agreed to terms on a one-year contract Monday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.

Blough started the final two games of the 2023 campaign with Kyler Murray (ACL) and Colt McCoy (undisclosed) unavailable, combining for 402 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions on 65.5 percent passing. However, Blough departed early Week 18 to be checked for a concussion and was unable to return. Presumably past the injury, he'll rejoin a QB room that still employs a rehabbing Murray and McCoy, meaning Blough may be in line for significant reps during the offseason program.

Getting concussion check

Blough was examined for a head injury during Sunday's contest at San Francisco.

The Cardinals made the announcement near the end of the third quarter, and if Blough is unable to return, he'll end Week 18 having completed 14 of 18 passes for 180 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, while turning two carries into minus-2 yards and losing a fumble. With Kyler Murray (knee) on IR and Colt McCoy (concussion) inactive Sunday, Trace McSorley took over for Blough under center.

Will start season finale

Blough will start Sunday's game against the 49ers, Tyler Drake of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Coach Kliff Kingsbury made the announcement Wednesday, ruling out Colt McCoy (concussion) in the process. Blough drew his first start for Arizona in last week's 20-19 loss to Atlanta, completing 24 of 40 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown. Dual-threat signal-caller Trace McSorley is the other healthy quarterback on the roster and will serve as Blough's backup.

Moderate success in spot start

Blough completed 24 of 40 passes for 222 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 20-19 loss to the Falcons.

Blough got a spot start with Colt McCoy sidelined by a concussion. He showed some competence even without the benefit of targeting DeAndre Hopkins (knee), and he connected regularly with Trey McBride and Marquise Brown. Blough threw his lone touchdown of the game early in the second quarter on a four-yard toss to Trey McBride. It remains to be seen who will be under center for Arizona in Week 18 for a matchup against the 49ers.

Named as Week 17 starter

RotoWire Logo Published: 2022-12-30

Blough will start Sunday's game in Atlanta with Colt McCoy bothered by concussion symptoms again, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.

Blough signed with the Cardinals less than three weeks ago and now gets the nod over Trace McSorley, who had three turnovers and only 4.8 yards per pass attempt in last week's loss to Tampa Bay. While not as mobile as McSorley, the 27-year-old Blough is likely at least somewhat more accurate as a passer, though he completed only 54 percent of his throws while going 0-5 as a starter for the Lions back in 2019. He didn't have much help in his Detroit days, and that could be the case again this Sunday with DeAndre Hopkins uncertain due to a late-week knee injury.
