Riley (concussion) wasn't participating in Monday's practice, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
According to Leonard, it's unclear when Riley sustained his concussion and how much time he's expected to miss. The 26-year-old appeared in 13 games for the Steelers last season, recording 12 total tackles on 214 special-teams snaps. Expect Riley to compete for another special-teams role once he moves past his concussion.
Signs with Giants
Riley signed with the Giants on Thursday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Riley wasn't re-signed by the Steelers after a two-year stint with the team where he recorded just 66 defensive snaps across 17 regular-season games. Indeed, the 25-year-old will need to make an impact on special teams to secure a spot on the 53-man roster in 2024.
Returns from IR
Pittsburgh activated Riley (ankle) from injured reserve Friday and has no injury designation ahead of Saturday's contest against the Bengals, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.
Riley sat out for the four-game IR minimum after sustaining an ankle injury in Week 11 against the Browns. He's primarily played on special teams but could see defensive snaps with Minak Fitzpatrick (knee) and Trenton Thompson (neck) both ruled out for Sunday's game.
Gets designation to return
Pittsburgh designated Riley (ankle) for return from its injured reserve list Tuesday, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.
The move opens a 21-day window during which the Steelers can activate Riley before they'd be forced to shut him down for the rest of the season. Their injury reports during the week will give some indication of whether he might be able to play in Week 16 versus the Bengals.
Move to IR
Riley (ankle) was placed on injured reserve Monday, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.
Riley suffered a high-ankle sprain in Sunday's loss to the Browns and was likely looking at a multi-week absence. With his move to IR, the Army product will now be guaranteed to miss at least four weeks before he can return to action. In a corresponding move, Trenton Thompson was signed to the team's 53-man roster after being elevated from the practice squad each of the last two weeks.
Looking at multi-week absence
Riley suffered a high-ankle sprain in Sunday's loss to the Browns, according to head coach Mike Tomlin, Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reports.
Riley headed to the locker room after suffering the injury and was unable to return to the contest. His likely absence for the week ahead will be another blow for Pittsburgh's secondary, who has lost Keanu Neal (ribs) to injured reserve and remains without Minkah Fitzpatrick (hamstring) for now.
Hurts ankle Week 11
Riley injured his ankle in Sunday's game against Cleveland and has been ruled out for the remainder of the contest, Alan Saunders of SteelersNow.com reports.
Riley headed to the locker room after suffering the injury, and he was ultimately unable to return. The veteran safety had been seeing more work on defense of late in the absence of Minkah Fitzpatrick (hamstring). Riley has also been a core special-teamers for the Steelers throughout the campaign.
