Learning another new offense

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-06-07

Hurts said he offense he's learning under new coordinator Kellen Moore is "probably 95 percent" new, Brooks Kubena of The Athletic reports.

Hurts will work with his fifth playcaller in as many pro seasons, having gone from Doug Pederson to Nick Sirianni to Shane Steichen to Brian Johnson to Moore. It sounds like this will be the biggest change to the Eagles offense since 2021, when Sirianni replaced Pederson as the head coach and the team drafted WR DeVonta Smith in the first round. The unit will have two new starters this season, with RB Saquon Barkley signed to replace D'Andre Swift (Bears) and the right guard job up for grabs with Cam Jurgens shifting over to center to replace a retired Jason Kelce. The new offense figures to entail a lot more pre-snap motion, something the Eagles used on a league-low 10.9 percent of plays last season (the Chargers ranked eighth under Moore at 25.9 percent).

Outdueled by Baker Mayfield

Hurts completed 25 of 35 pass attempts for 250 yards and a touchdown in the wild-card round of the playoffs, only adding one rush attempt for five yards in a 32-9 loss to Tampa Bay.

Hurts 2023 campaign comes to viscous halt after he and the Eagles mustered just one touchdown in a lopsided playoff loss to the Bucs. The 2022 MVP runner-up turned in a pedestrian passing performance despite not carrying an injury designation from a dislocated finger suffered against the Giants in Week 18. Hurts' one rushing attempt Monday checks in as his lowest total over 18 starts this year. From a fantasy perspective, the dual-threat superstar did his thing with 4,463 combined yards from scrimmage and 38 touchdowns compared to last year's 35 total scores. The only complaint from Hurts' stellar 17-game campaign would be the dramatic increase in turnovers compared to his breakout season (20 compared to eight). Philadelphia will have to lick its wounds and regroup this upcoming offseason after an ugly end to what was poised to be a promising campaign.

Clear for Monday's game

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-01-13

Hurts (right finger) doesn't have a designation for Monday's wild-card game at Tampa Bay.

Hurts departed the Eagles' regular-season finale at the Giants before halftime due to a dislocated right middle finger, but after opening the week of prep as limited Thursday, he capped it with back-to-back full sessions. On Friday, in particular, when he attempted his first passes since suffering the injury, he "was throwing deep balls, he was throwing lasers," as WR Britain Covey told Reuben Frank of NBC Sports Philadelphia. While Hurts will continue to lead the offense, he'll be without A.J. Brown (knee) for the first time since the wide receiver was acquired from the Titans during the 2022 Draft. With Brown sidelined, WRs DeVonta Smith, Julio Jones and Quez Watkins, TE Dallas Goedert and RB D'Andre Swift will be the key pass catchers available to Hurts.

Logs full practice Friday

Hurts (right finger) practiced fully Friday.

Hurts was knocked out of this past Sunday's loss at the Giants before halftime due to a dislocated right middle finger, yielding quarterback duties to backup Marcus Mariota for the rest of the contest. Fortunately for Hurts, X-rays came back negative afterward, and he was considered day-to-day, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. On both Thursday and Friday, Hurts wore a glove on his right hand, and in the latter practice, he was seen attempting multiple passes, according to Brooks Kubena of The Athletic. With his progression from limited to open the week of prep to all activity Friday, Hurts appears to be in the clear as the Eagles prepare for Monday's wild-card game in Tampa Bay.

Officially limited Thursday

Hurts (right finger) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday.

Hurts' Week 18 was abbreviated due to a dislocated right middle finger that he attempted to play through before he was pulled for backup Marcus Mariota ahead of halftime. X-rays were returned negative after the Eagles' loss at the Giants, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, and Hurts spoke of the injury Thursday, telling EJ Smith of The Philadelphia Inquirer that it was "probably not, physically, the best idea" to return Sunday. Hurts also noted that "everything is progressing in the right way" as the Eagles prepare for Monday's wild-card contest at Tampa Bay, but he likely will wear a glove on his right hand, as he did at Thursday's session, according to Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer. As for the rest of Philadelphia's skill group, WR A.J. Brown (knee) didn't practice Thursday, while RB D'Andre Swift (illness) and WR DeVonta Smith (ankle) were full participants.

Seen at practice Tuesday

Hurts (finger) was present at the media-access portion of Thursday's practice, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Hurts missed a handful of plays in the second quarter of this past Sunday's loss at the Giants to have his dislocated right middle finger taped up, but he ultimately was pulled before halftime in an eventual 27-10 loss. On Monday, it was revealed by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network that X-rays were returned negative on the appendage in question. Prior to reconvening for practice Thursday, Hurts said that it was "probably not, physically, the best idea" to return to action Sunday, and he also had yet to throw since the game, but "everything is progressing in the right way," per EJ Smith of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Hurts was donning gloves on both of his hands Thursday, which may be his reality for as long as he's dealing with the injury.

X-rays on finger come back clean

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-01-08

Hurts' (finger) X-rays showed no fracture, and he's viewed as day to day, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Hurts dislocated the middle finger on his right (throwing) hand in Sunday's loss to the Giants and was removed from the game just before halftime with the Eagles trailing 24-0. Marcus Mariota finished the game, going 13 of 20 passing for 148 yards, one touchdown and one interception, adding six carries for 46 yards. The Eagles travel to Tampa Bay to face the Bucs in the first round of the playoffs next Monday night.

Gets pulled in Week 18 loss

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-01-07

Hurts completed seven of 16 passes for 55 yards and an interception before being replaced by Marcus Mariota late in the second quarter of Sunday's 27-10 loss to the Giants.

Hurts also added four rushing yards on two carries. The Eagles began the afternoon using their starters, as they still had a slim chance to win the NFC East, but they effectively no-showed the game and Hurts got pulled after the Giants had grabbed a 24-0 lead. Philly's late-season collapse has left them with the No. 5 seed in the postseason and a road game in Tampa Bay for the wild-card round next weekend, and Hurts will head into the playoffs potentially down his top two targets in DeVonta Smith (ankle) and A.J. Brown (knee).

Throws for three scores in loss

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-12-31

Hurts completed 18 of 23 pass attempts for 167 yards with three touchdowns and one intercpetion while adding 25 rushing yards on eight attempts in Sunday's 35-31 loss to the Cardinals.

Hurts didn't post gaudy yardage totals in Sunday's narrow defeat, but he helped fantasy squads by registering his third game with at least three passing touchdowns this season. The dual-threat quarterback couldn't supplement his passing efforts on the ground after finishing with less than 30 yards and no rushing scores for just the second time this year. Hurts may be without one of his top targets in Week 18 after DeVonta Smith (foot) was seen using crutches after suffering a foot injury late in Sunday's last-minute loss to Arizona.
