Signs one-year extension

Latest Headline: Published 2023-05-02

Love is signing a one-year extension worth up to $22.5 million, including $13.5 million fully guaranteed, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Love and the Packers found a workaround shortly before the deadline for fifth-year options for 2020 first-round picks. The team apparently wasn't comfortable guaranteeing Love a $20.3 million salary for 2024, instead convincing him to accept a one-year extension with a smaller guarantee and a slightly higher ceiling. The 24-year-old is set to take over as Green Bay's starting quarterback after the Aaron Rodgers trade, leading an offense with Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon in the backfield and Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Jayden Reed projecting as the top three wide receivers. The Packers took Reed in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, also adding TE Luke Musgrave (Round 2), TE Tucker Kraft (Round 3) and WR Dontayvion Wicks (Round 5).

Officially taking over for Rodgers

Latest Headline: Published 2023-04-24

The Packers will move on to Love at quarterback after agreeing to trade Aaron Rodgers to the Jets on Monday, Rich Cimini and Rob Demovsky of reports.

With the long-awaited deal soon to be ironed out in the coming days, the post-Rodgers era in Green Bay now has clarity. A first-round pick in 2020, Love has just 10 appearances and one start on his resume through three campaigns, having completed 50 of 83 passes (60.2 percent) for 606 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions and rushing 13 times for 26 yards. His performance (113 yards and a TD strike to Christian Watson in one and a half quarters) in place of Rodgers against the Eagles in Week 12 last season likely was the sign the Packers needed that Love was ready to take over the offense. As the roster stands before the 2023 Draft, the skill-position talent at Love's disposal consists of notables like running backs Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon and wide receivers Watson and Romeo Doubs.

Offense in transition

Latest Headline: Published 2023-03-28

Coach Matt LaFleur noted at the Annual League Meeting on Tuesday that "it's going to be a progression" as the Packers move from Aaron Rodgers to Love at quarterback, Rob Demovsky of reports.

The expected trade of Rodgers from Green Bay to the Jets has yet to go through, but both LaFleur and GM Brian Gutekunst have relayed this week the Packers' intention to deal their long-time signal-caller. Aside from the pending transaction, the team also must make a decision on whether to pick up the fifth-year option on Love's rookie contract, which needs to happen by May 1. Since being selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Love hasn't gotten much in-game action with Rodgers leading the offense. In 10 appearances (one start), Love has completed 50 of 83 passes (60.2 percent) for 606 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Spends another season as backup

Latest Headline: Published 2023-02-20

Love completed 14 of 21 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown over four appearances during the 2022 season.

The former first-rounder played sparingly in his third season, with the highlight being his late-game performance in the Packers' Week 12 loss to the Eagles. He could finally get a real chance to show what he can do in 2023 if fellow quarterback Aaron Rodgers moves on or retires, but his status will be in limbo until Rodgers' situation is resolved.
