Questionable to return

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-10-03

Whitehead (groin) is questionable to return to Thursday's game against the Falcons, Brianna Dix of the Buccaneers' official site reports.

The safety recorded five tackles (four solo) and a pass defensed before leaving the game. Whitehead had 31 tackles (20 solo) and two passes defensed in Tampa Bay's first four games. Kaevon Merriweather is the next man up on the depth chart.

Continues steady start to campaign

Whitehead registered six tackles (five solo) in a 33-16 Week 4 victory over the Eagles on Sunday.

Whitehead tied for second on the Buccaneers in stops behind linebacker Lavonte David. Whitehead has recorded at least six tackles in all four of Tampa Bay's contests so far this year, giving him a reliable IDP floor. The safety is coming off a career-best 97 stops last season as a member of the Jets.

Solid tackle output in loss

Whitehead tallied six tackles (three solo) in the Buccaneers' 26-7 loss to the Broncos on Sunday.

The veteran safety tied with several teammates for third in tackles on the afternoon for the Buccaneers. Whitehead has played the last two games without Antoine Winfield (foot) alongside him in the defensive backfield, and the former has collected 17 tackles (11 solo) and a defensed pass over that span.

Reaches double-digit tackles

Whitehead recorded 11 tackles (eight solo) and a pass defended in Sunday's 20-16 win over the Lions.

Whitehead's 11 combined tackles tied a single-game career-high and was just his fourth double-digit tackle game in his seven-year career. He also recorded his tackle for a loss since Week 7 of the 2023 campaign. Next up for the Pittsburgh product and the Buccaneers defense is a Week 3 matchup with the Broncos.

Makes eight tackles in win

Whitehead recorded eight tackles (four solo) and a pass defensed in the Buccaneers' 37-20 win over the Commanders on Sunday.

The safety also helped limit the Commanders to less than 300 yards of total offense. Whitehead spent the first four seasons of his career with Tampa Bay before playing for the Jets for the last two. After finishing 2023 with 97 tackles, nine passes defensed and four interceptions, Whitehead signed a two-year, $9-million deal with the Bucs in the offseason.

Set for Sunday

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-09-02

Whitehead is good to go this week, head coach Todd Bowles stated Monday, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.

Whitehead returned to practice last week after missing a significant amount of training camp and not suiting up in a single preseason game. Despite this, it appears it's all systems go for the Pittsburgh product, and he should be getting the start at strong safety Sunday against the Commanders.

Gets back on practice field

Whitehead (quadriceps) will resume practicing Tuesday, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports.

Whitehead missed the majority of training camp and all three of Tampa Bay's preseason contests due to a lingering quadriceps injury, so it's encouraging to see him back at practice in at least a limited capacity. The starting safety has just under two weeks remaining to get fully healthy prior to the Buccaneers' regular-season opener against Washington on Sept. 8.

Still sidelined

Whitehead (quadriceps) remains sidelined with a quad injury, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports.

It has been one week since Whitehead sustained the injury at practice. The team has not given any sort of timetable for his return as of now. When healthy, the 27-year-old is projected to start next to Antoine Winfield at safety in the Buccaneers' secondary in the upcoming season. While he is sidelined, Rashad Wisdom is presumably getting plent of reps in at strong safety.
