Likely playing Week 1
Head coach Raheem Morris told reporters Thursday that he expects Simmons to be ready for the Falcons' Week 1 game against the Steelers, Marc Raimondi of ESPN.com reports.
Simmons inked a one-year, $8 million deal with the Falcons just two weeks ago, but he's still expected to be ready to play in Atlanta's Week 1 contest Sep. 8. The veteran safety appeared in 15 regular-season games with the Broncos last season, recording 70 total tackles and eight passes defended, including three interceptions while receiving second-team All-Pro honors. He and Jessie Bates are expected to be one of, if not the best, safety duos in the entire league in 2024.

Another upgrade for Atlanta
The Falcons agreed to terms Thursday on a one-year, $8 million contract with Simmons, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Simmons inks with Atlanta just one day after the team traded for pass-rusher Matthew Judon from New England, and those two veteran acquisitions could be enough to revamp what previously looked like an underwhelming starting defense. Now entering his age-31 season, Simmons figures to replace Richie Grant as the starter across from Jesse Bates. Simmons has logged multiple INTs in each of his eight pro seasons, totaling 30 in his career, so he brings some much needed big-play ability to the Falcons' secondary.
Released by Denver
The Broncos are releasing Simmons in a move that frees up $14.5 million in cap space, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
The 30-year-old safety had one year remaining on the four-year, $61 million contract that he signed in 2021 after being franchise-tagged for a second straight offseason. Simmons has long been regarded as one of the league's better safeties, with multiple interceptions in each of his eight pro seasons (30 overall) and at least 69 tackles seven years in a row. He may be past his prime but shouldn't have a hard time finding another starting job.
Nabs three interceptions in 2023
Simmons recorded 70 tackles (53 solo), including one sack, three interceptions, eight passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery over 15 contests during the 2023 campaign.
Simmons led all Broncos defenders with three interceptions in his eighth season in Denver. The 30-year-old safety turned in another solid season as an integral part of the Broncos' improving defense, recording the fourth-most tackles on the team in 2023. Simmons will enter the final year of his current contract before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2025. The veteran will look to continue his impressive play and remain a key member of Denver's defense next season.
Six stops in win
Simmons finished Sunday's 16-9 win over the Chargers with six solo tackles.
Simmons managed to suit up for Week 17 after battling through an illness and played 62 defensive snaps. He's up to 67 total tackles over 14 games this season and is two shy of matching his total from 2022.
Good to go for Week 17
Simmons (illness) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Chargers.
Simmons missed some practice reps this week with an illness but is ready to roll for Sunday's divisional tilt with Los Angeles. Simmons has started all 13 games he's appeared in this season, generating 61 tackles (44 solo), eight pass breakups, three interceptions and one sack.
Dealing with illness
Simmons (illness) did not participate at practice Thursday, Ryan McFadden of The Denver Post reports.
The severity of Simmons' ailment is unknown at this point, but his availability for Week 17 is now in doubt. He'll likely have to log a full practice Friday to avoid carrying an injury designation into the weekend.
Gets first sack of the year in win
Simmons had six tackles (three solo), including one sack, and a forced fumble in Sunday's 24-7 win over the Chargers.
Simmons strip-sacked backup quarterback Easton Stick late in the fourth quarter for a 10-yard loss, which was recovered by Austin Ekeler. Simmons played every single defensive snap for the third straight game, and although his tackle numbers aren't as much as previous seasons, he's still provided a steady, veteran presence in the Denver secondary.
Nabs interception in win
Simmons recorded five tackles (two solo), one interception and a forced fumble in Monday's 24-22 win over the Bills.
Simmons continued his solid 2023 campaign, recording his third interception through seven games. The veteran's five total tackles were also tied for the third-most among Denver defenders Monday. Simmons continues to be a difference maker on what is an improving Broncos defense. The 29-year-old safety will look to continue his role as a strong defensive contributor when the Broncos host the Vikings in Week 11.
