Shifts to IR
The Lions placed Sudfeld (knee) on injured reserve Tuesday.
Sudfeld suffered a torn ACL during Detroit's preseason finale, so it was already known that he would miss the entire 2023 season. The 29-year-old will turn his focus toward making a recovery for the 2024 campaign.

Torn ACL confirmed
Sudfeld (knee) is done for the 2023 season due to a torn ACL, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Sudfeld received a second opinion Monday, confirming the season-ending severity of the knee injury he suffered in Friday's preseason finale against the Panthers. With Sudfeld done for the year and Hendon Hooker (knee) still on the active/non-football injury list, Detroit becomes a strong candidate to add another healthy body to the quarterback room behind Jared Goff and Teddy Bridgewater, other than undrafted rookie Adrian Martinez.
Injury may be serious
Coach Dan Campbell declined to confirm Monday whether Sudfeld (knee) is dealing with a torn ACL, and said the quarterback will receive a second opinion, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
Sudfeld was forced to depart Friday's preseason game early, and it appears that he may be dealing with a significant knee injury. More details about Sudfeld's recovery timetable should be made available after he receives a second opinion, but with Hendon Hooker (knee) still on the active/non-football injury list, UDFA Adrian Martinez is currently the Lions' only healthy option behind Jared Goff and Teddy Bridgewater.
Suffers apparent knee injury
Sudfeld exited Friday's preseason game after his knee buckled while rolling out of the pocket, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
The 29-year-old was then carted off the field after suffering this injury, per Steve Reed of the Associated Press. Sudfeld is currently fighting for a spot on the Lions' active roster behind quarterbacks Jared Goff and Teddy Bridgewater, and this doesn't help his case. The extent of the veteran's injury is unknown at the moment.
Returning to Detroit
Sudfeld and the Lions agreed to a contract Friday.
Sudfeld will be back in Detroit next season after spending the 2022 campaign with the team. He'll likely operate as the top backup behind starting quarterback Jared Goff once again in 2023. Sudfeld has not thrown a pass in an NFL regular-season contest since 2020 and is unlikely to have much of an impact unless Goff goes down with an injury.
