Production stagnates in 2023

Gray finished the 2023 regular season with 28 catches for 305 yards and two touchdowns on 41 targets.

While Gray didn't take a step back this season, he didn't really leap forward offensively either, essentially matching his numbers from a season ago. Travis Kelce turns 35 in October and is likely drawing closer to the end of his career, so the Chiefs' brass may evaluate this offseason whether Gray is the future of the tight end position in KC. Gray remains on his rookie deal through the 2024 campaign and will presumably continue to contribute in two-tight end sets next season, assuming the Chiefs don't pursue a tight end in the 2024 NFL Draft. Kelce has indicated he doesn't intend to retire any time soon and remains under contract through 2025, so Gray doesn't have a clear path to upgraded playing time next season either.

Nabs three passes

Gray gathered in three of four targets for 17 yards during Sunday's 25-17 win against the Bengals.

Gray continues to see work alongside Travis Kelce at tight end in two-tight end sets, but he hasn't reeled in more than three passes in a game this year. He has just two touchdowns on the ledger. He hasn't compiled more than 38 receiving yards in a game this year, leaving him well off the fantasy radar in leagues besides potentially holding him in deep dynasty formats, where he could gain value should Kelce elect to retire after the 2023 campaign. That said, Gray could see slightly heightened value in Week 18 if the Chiefs, who are locked into the No. 3 seed in the AFC, elect to rest Kelce and some of the other veterans.

Records three receptions

Gray played 30 of the Chiefs' 60 snaps on offense and finished with three catches for 30 yards on three targets in Sunday's 31-17 win over the Raiders.

Gray failed to record a reception for the first time all season in the Chiefs' Week 11 loss to the Eagles, but he was able to bounce back nicely in Kansas City's come-from-behind win over the Raiders. As long as top tight end Travis Kelce is available, Gray is unlikely to rank as anything more than a tertiary option in the Kansas City passing game, though the Duke product does at least see fairly consistent involvement. Gray has drawn between one and five targets in each of his 11 appearances to date.

Minimal impact continues

Gray reeled in both of his targets for 14 yards during Thursday's 19-8 victory against the Broncos.

While Gray is seeing a decent number of snaps consistently, it's simply the case among any targets not named Travis Kelce in the passing attack that the looks are going to be widely distributed. Gray has no more than three targets in a contest since the season opener, and there's little reason to expect any change on that front as long as Kelce is available.

Notches pair of catches Sunday

Gray gathered in both of his targets for 21 yards during Sunday's 27-20 victory versus the Vikings.

Gray saw an uptick in his playing time this week due to Travis Kelce missing some action during the contest after Kelce suffered an ankle injury midgame. Pending the status of Kelce for Thursday's contest against the Broncos, Gray could be in line for a slightly healthier workload, though that doesn't guarantee a sizable fantasy output.

Ready to go at Jets

Gray (illness) does not carry an injury designation ahead of Sunday's game at the Jets.

After missing practice Wednesday and Thursday with an illness, Gray was a full participant at practice Friday and will suit up for Week 4. His snap count has remained relatively steady even with the return of Travis Kelce, but he's only seen five targets over the past two games.

Still recovering from illness

Gray (illness) did not practice Thursday, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.

Gray was also absent from practice Wednesday, as he continues to work to get himself back to full health. The Duke product still has a couple of days to recover before the team's game against the Jets on Sunday, but he'll remain questionable for the contest for now.

Dealing with illness

Gray (illness) will not practice Wednesday, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.

Gray still has a few days to recover before the team's Week 4 contest with the Jets, but he can currently be considered questionable for the game. If he's unable to play, Blake Bell would likely need to step into a larger workload, while the Chiefs may need to elevate Matt Bushman from the practice squad.

Catches three passes

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-09-20

Gray secured all three of his targets for 38 yards in Sunday's 17-9 win over the Jaguars.

Gray reeled in three catches for the second-straight week, despite Travis Kelce making his 2023 debut in Week 2. Surprisingly, the third-year tight end's 41 offensive snaps Sunday were just two fewer than that of Kelce, who saw a team-high nine targets in the contest. Gray's role will likely be limited moving forward and should keep him off the fantasy radar in Week 3 when the Chiefs host the Bears.
