Option should be picked up

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-02-27

Surtain is expected to have his fifth-year option exercised by the Broncos, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.

Surtain had another individually successful campaign in 2023, recording a career-high 69 tackles, albeit while notching a career-low, one interception. However, the Alabama product remains one of the better corners in the league, so having his option picked up, and keeping him in Denver for at least two more seasons, makes sense.

Surtain made 69 tackles (59 solo) to go with 12 passes defended and one interception while playing in all 17 games across the 2023 season.

Surtain's 69 total tackles were a career-high for the third-year cornerback. In addition, he led the team in passes defended for the second straight season. Surtain has proven to be one of the league's best defensive backs, and he'll enter the final year of his rookie contract next season in Denver before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2025. The 23-year-old will look ahead to 2024 in the hopes to continue the impressive start to his young career as a difference maker in Denver.

Surtain (knee) has returned to Sunday's game against the Texans, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports.

Surtain had trouble walking off the field and made a trip to the blue medical tent before testing his knee on the sidelines. Ultimately, the Alabama product felt he could return to the game and has done so, which is good news for the Broncos secondary.

Questionable to return

Surtain suffered a knee injury Sunday against the Texans and is questionable to return, Lindsey Thiry of reports.

The cornerback had some trouble walking off the field, entered the blue medical tent on the sideline and then tested his knee in the bench area, per Troy Renck of Denver 7 News and Lindsey Thiry of Surtain did not record a stat before exiting. Damarri Mathis has replaced him.

Notches interception in loss

Surtain recorded five tackles (four solo), one interception and one pass defended in Sunday's 31-21 loss to the Jets.

Surtain's interception Sunday was his first of the 2023 campaign, and his five total tackles in the contest matched his season-high through five games. The 23-year-old cornerback has proven to be an excellent corner in the league with the ability to make big plays on defense. With a solid start to the season under his belt, Surtain and the Broncos defense will face a big test in Week 6 when the Broncos visit the Chiefs.

Back in pads

Surtain (undisclosed) practiced in pads with the team Tuesday, Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post reports.

Surtain only did individual drills Monday and was able to make a quick recovery from whatever was keeping him away from being a full participant. The 23-year-old's return to full health is certainly good news for the Broncos' defense.

Unable to practice Monday

Surtain (undisclosed) worked out on a side field Monday instead of participating in practice, Zac Stevens of DNVR Sports reports.

Surtain's inability to practice Monday suggests he's dealing with an injury, but coach Sean Payton doesn't expect the star cornerback's absence to linger. Per Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette, Payton said after practice Monday that he expects Surtain to be available for the team's next preseason game against the 49ers on Saturday.

Impressive in sophomore season

Surtain made 60 tackles (45 solo) to go with 10 passes defended, two interceptions and one forced fumble while playing in all 17 games across the 2022 season.

Surtain completed a strong second season in the Broncos' formidable secondary, leading the team in passes defended. The 22-year-old continues to prove why he was worth the ninth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Surtain is still on his four-year rookie deal, so he remains under contract with the Broncos through the 2024 season. One of the league's young stars at cornerback, Surtain will look to build upon the impressive start to his career when he takes the field for the 2023 campaign.
