Won't play Week 5

Gregory won't be available to play for San Francisco on Sunday versus Dallas, Nick Wagoner of reports.

The 49ers acquired Gregory in a trade with the Broncos on Friday, but the veteran edge rusher won't get a chance to show off his skills for his new team until Week 6. The addition of Gregory should bolster a San Francisco pass rush that already features reigning NFL DPOY Nick Bosa.

Dealt to San Fran

Gregory was traded to San Francisco on Friday, along with a 2024 seventh-round draft pick, while Denver received a 2024 sixth-round pick in return, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Gregory was expected to be released imminently, but the Broncos managed to find a trade suitor instead to get out from under some of his five-year, $70 million contract. Gregory has struggled to stay on the field since signing that contract in the 2022 offseason, but the 30-year-old edge rusher could make San Francisco's vaunted defense even more fearsome if Gregory can stay healthy. He has just one sack through four games in 2023 but recorded six sacks in both 2018 and 2021.

Coach Sean Payton noted Wednesday that Gregory will be released if he's not traded within the next 24 to 48 hours, Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette reports.

Per Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post, Payton cited the play of the Broncos' younger players as the reason that the team plans to move on from Gregory. In four games this season, Gregory has recorded nine tackles and a sack.

Likely headed for free agency

Gregory is expected to be released by the Broncos, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.

Gregory has served a rotational role in the team's linebacker corps this season, recording nine tackles (four solo) and a sack through the team's first four games. The Nebraska product signed a five-year, $70 million contract with the team last offseason, but was held back by injuries last season and has been unable to make the impact he was expected to.

Gregory was practicing with the team Thursday, Zac Stevens of reports.

Gregory finished the 2022 campaign on injured reserve due to a knee injury. However, it appears the 30-year-old is now fully healed and ready to compete. A healthy Gregory, who missed a total of 11 games last season, would be a major boon for the Broncos' defense moving forward.

Done for season

Gregory (knee) was placed on injured reserve Saturday.

That now makes 21 Broncos placed on injured reserve to start the season, easily the most in the NFL. The 29-year-old played in just six games this season, as Gregory also was placed on injured reserve earlier this year after undergoing surgery to trim his meniscus. He ends the 2022 season with just two sacks and 19 total sacks, hardly figures expected after he joined the franchise on a five-year, $70 million deal this offseason.

Ruled out for Week 17

Gregory (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Kansas City, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.

Although Gregory had his one-game suspension reduced to a fine, he was unable to practice this week due to a knee injury. Jonathon Cooper will likely see increased playing time against the Chiefs.
