Won't practice again
James (knee) will not practice Thursday, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
James is still recovering from an MCL injury and is likely on the wrong side of questionable for Sunday's game against the Bears. According to special teams coach Dave Toub, if James misses, the team may turn to a committee of Kadarius Toney (toe), Skyy Moore and Justin Watson for return duties, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.

Dealing with MCL injury
James (knee) will not practice Wednesday, according to head coach Andy Reid, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
James is likely in danger of missing the team's game against the Bears on Sunday, although he's currently listed as questionable. Although his potential absence would likely have minimal impact on offense, the team would have to look elsewhere for a return man on special teams if he's unable to play.
Snares one pass in opener
James hauled in one of two targets for six yards during Thursday's 21-20 loss to the Lions.
As has become par for the course since Tyreek Hill was traded to the Dolphins prior to the 2022 campaign, quarterback Patrick Mahomes continues to spread the ball around the wide receiver room, targeting six different wideouts at least two times. James did play more snaps than both Kadariaus Toney and rookie Rashee Rice. Even so, he's unlikely to produce consistently enough to warrant fantasy consideration in most formats at this juncture.
Upgrades to full practice
James (knee) was a full participant in Tuesday's practice.
After being listed as a limited participant in the Chiefs' initial Week 1 injury report released Monday, James' ability to take every rep a day later clears up any concern about his health heading into Thursday's season opener versus the Lions. Fellow wideout Kadarius Toney (knee) is also trending toward suiting up Thursday despite being limited Tuesday for the second day in a row, while star tight end Travis Kelce's status appears to be more in question after he hyperextended his knee during Tuesday's session. James is expected to fill a minor role in the Kansas City offense when the team is at full strength, but a potential Kelce absence in Week 1 could open up extra targets for James and several other pass catchers.
Limited with knee injury
James was a limited participant during Monday's practice due to a knee injury.
The severity of James' knee injury remains unclear, but it's a bit concerning since Kadarius Toney (knee) was also limited Monday. There doesn't appear to be too much concern about either wideout's availability for Thursday's season opener versus Detroit, but fantasy managers are still encouraged to check Kansas City's injury reports over the next couple of days.
Should see more opportunities
James will be given a bigger role in Kansas City's offense with Kadarius Toney (knee) missing time, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
James signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Chiefs this offseason after he led the Giants in receptions in 2022 and now should see an uptick in work during camp with Toney on the sidelines. Last year was the best season of the veteran wideout's career, where he tallied 57 receptions for 569 yards and five touchdowns. Don't be surprised if James has an even better year ahead of him with an increase in opportunities and Patrick Mahomes at the helm.
Signs on with Kansas City
The Chiefs signed James on Friday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
The 27-year-old is coming off a career year with the Giants, catching 57 of 70 targets for 569 yards and four touchdowns as Daniel Jones' slot receiver. In Kansas City, James can compete to fill the slot job vacated by JuJu Smith-Schuster, but the Chiefs likely have bigger plans for both Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore in their second seasons with the team. James is at least serviceable depth.
Solid showing in season-ending loss
James secured seven of 10 targets for 51 yards in the Giants' 38-7 divisional-round loss to the Eagles on Saturday night. He also returned one punt for minus-3 yards.
James was the only Giants wideout to make any sort of impact, leading the team in receptions, receiving yards and targets by a wide margin. The journeyman enjoyed a career-best season in coach Brian Daboll's scheme, posting new high-water marks in receptions (57), receiving yards (569) and touchdowns (four) on a career-high 70 targets during the regular season. James played the 2022 season on a one-year deal, so it remains to be seen if he'll be deemed worthy of running it back with New York next season.
Continues late-season surge
James caught all seven of his targets for 76 yards and a touchdown in the Giants' Week 17 win over Indianapolis.
For the fourth straight week, James led the Giants in receiving yards, and he also paced the team in both targets and catches. The wideout accounted for New York's first touchdown in the big victory when he connected with quarterback Daniel Jones for a six-yard score in the second quarter. James has emerged as the team's most productive wideout late in the campaign, totaling 26 catches for 269 yards and two touchdowns over the past four weeks. The Giants face Philadelphia in Week 18, but it remains to be seen how much they'll play their starters in that contest with a playoff berth clinched and nothing to gain with a victory.
