Targeted twice in defeat
Tonyan failed to catch either of his two targets in the Bears' 27-17 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday.
After being sidelined for the season opener, Tonyan made his Chicago debut as the secondary tight end option behind Cole Kmet. Even though it's unlikely than Tonyan challenges Kmet for regular targets, he could see a couple passes thrown his way in many games.

Playing Sunday
Tonyan (back) is active for Sunday's game against the Packers.
Tonyan avoided the Bears' Week 1 injury report until Saturday, when he was tacked on to it with a back issue and listed as questionable for Sunday. It won't stop him from suiting up for the season opener, but he may yield TE reps to Marcedes Lewis behind Cole Kmet, the Bears' top option at the position. No matter, Tonyan will be looking to make an impact versus his previous employer.
Added to injury report
Tonyan was added to the injury report with a back injury and is listed as questionable for Sunday's contest against the Packers.
The Bears elevated Stephen Carlson from the practice squad signaling something was amiss with the tight end personnel. Tonyan, an offseason addition for the Bears, was expected to be a key contributor alongside newly re-signed starter Cole Kmet, although the exact playing time split for the two tight ends wasn't clear. Expect Marcedes Lewis to come in as a blocking specialist in the event Tonyan is unable to play.
Important part of offense
Tonyan is expected to see significant snaps in the regular season, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Although Cole Kmet is the Bears' primary tight end, the team expects to use two tight ends frequently. When the team is looking to attack through the air, Tonyan is likely to be on the field while seeing targets. When the team is focusing on the rushing attack, the second tight end could be Marcedes Lewis or Stephen Carlson. Even though Tonyan is expected to be involved in the passing game, it seems likely that he'll be a secondary option behind Kmet.
Could see significant snaps
Tonyan was "pretty involved" with the first-team offense during OTAs with the Bears expecting to use more sets with two tight ends than in 2022, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Based on June practices, it appears that Tonyan and Cole Kmet will both be on the field at the same time on many occasions. With both players being capable receivers, both should see targets, though Kmet is more likely to lead the position in snaps and targets. Although Tonyan should have production as a receiver, don't be surprised if his role is less consistent than Kmet's on a week-to-week basis.
Joining Chicago
Tonyan agreed Thursday with the Bears on a one-year deal, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Tonyan, who logged a career-high 53 catches (on 67 targets) for 470 yards and two touchdowns in 17 games with the Packers last season, adds quality depth to a Chicago tight end corps that also includes returning starter Cole Kmet. The duo will provide QB Justin Fields with a pair of solid pass catchers at the position, but the prospect of a timeshare with Kmet caps Tonyan's fantasy upside ahead of the coming season.
Catches three passes in loss
Tonyan caught all three of his targets for 29 yards in Sunday's 20-16 loss to the Lions.
The veteran tight end was on the field for 37 of the Packers' 60 offensive snaps and was unable to produce much for fantasy purposes with his opportunities. He finished the season with 53 catches for 470 yards and two touchdowns. Fantasy managers thinking that Tonyan would become a bigger factor in 2022 with the departures of Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling were met with great disappointment, as the 28-year-old was typically an afterthought in Green Bay's inconsistent aerial attack. After inking a one-year, $3.75 million contract with Green Bay last offseason, Tonyan is set to become a free agent in the spring.
Breaks TD drought Sunday
Tonyan caught three of four targets for 52 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 41-17 win over the Vikings.
The veteran tight end was on the other end of Aaron Rodgers' only TD pass of the day, a 21-yard toss in the second quarter that gave the team a 24-3 lead. Tonyan snapped an 11-game scoring drought in the process, as his only other trip to the end zone this season came in Week 4, while his 52 receiving yards represented his best performance since Week 6. He's now three catches short of breaking his career high of 52, a personal record he'll try to set in a must-win Week 18 clash with the Lions.
