Set for backup duties

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-10-11

Ehlinger will operate as Indianapolis' top backup to Garner Minshew with Anthony Richardson (shoulder) having been placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Stephen Holder of ESPN reports.

Ehlinger hasn't yet been active for a game this season, sometimes as a healthy scratch and at other points due to a shoulder injury. Now fully healthy, however, he looks primed to work as the Colts' No. 2 quarterback behind Minshew starting Week 6 versus Jacksonville. With Richardson expected to miss four-to-eight weeks, Ehlinger should be active as a reserve option on game days for the foreseeable future.

Sheds shoulder issue

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-10-04

Ehlinger was not listed on Indianapolis' injury report Wednesday.

After cropping up on last week's injury report with a shoulder problem, Ehlinger is now apparently back to full strength ahead of Week 5. He should continue to serve as the Colts' third option at quarterback behind Anthony Richardson and Gardner Minshew.

Still dealing with injury

Ehlinger (shoulder) is inactive Sunday against the Rams.

Ehlinger, despite the injury and being considered inactive, will still suit up as the team's emergency option at quarterback. However, for him to see the field, Anthony Richardson and Gardner Minshew would both need to suffer injuries.

Questionable with shoulder injury

Ehlinger (shoulder) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Rams.

Ehlinger was limited Thursday and didn't practice Friday, suggesting that he suffered the injury during the week. If available, Ehlinger would be called upon only if both Anthony Richardson and Gardner Minshew get injured; Richardson has been cleared to play after missing the previous game due to a concussion.

Serving as emergency QB

Ehlinger (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's matchup against the Texans, but he'll dress and serve as the Colts' emergency quarterback.

Ehlinger doesn't count against the 53-man roster but will be available if Anthony Richardson and Gardner Minshew are forced out of the game. Ehlinger appeared in four games for Indianapolis last year and completed 63 percent of his passes for 573 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Strong outing as No. 3 QB

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-08-20

Ehlinger was 9-of-14 passing for 124 yards and had eight carries for 60 yards, including a five-yard touchdown, in Saturday's preseason win over Chicago.

Despite nominally being in the starting quarterback competition to begin training camp, Ehlinger appears locked into the No. 3 quarterback role with Anthony Richardson named the Week 1 starter and Gardner Minshew set as the backup. A larger question may be whether the Colts plan to keep three quarterbacks on the active roster.

Sharp in preseason debut

Ehlinger was 8-for-9 passing for 72 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in Saturday's preseason loss at Buffalo. He also add two carries for 10 yards.

Ehlinger entered the game in the second half as the third quarterback to play. He was efficient in facing the second- and third-team defense. While he's nominally said to be in the competition for the starting job, he more likely is fighting to keep a spot on the roster with Gardner Minshew and Anthony Richardson ahead of him.

In competition for starting job

Ehlinger will enter training camp in a competition for the starting quarterback role in Indianapolis, Raven Moore of the Colts' official site reports.

Ehlinger appeared in four games last season, including three starts, producing 573 passing yards and three touchdowns while throwing three interceptions. He enters camp as the third quarterback behind Gardner Minshew and first-rounder Anthony Richardson, making it unlikely that he gets the starting nod in 2023.

Solid in Week 18 spot start

RotoWire Logo Published: 2023-01-08

Ehlinger completed 23 of 35 passes for 209 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Colts' 32-31 loss to the Texans on Sunday. He also rushed five times for 21 yards and committed a fumble recovered by Indianapolis.

Ehlinger's pair of turnovers, which unfolded on consecutive second-quarter possessions, certainly didn't help, especially with the first resulting a pick-six and the second coming two yards away from the Texans' end zone. However, Ehlinger did put up some solid numbers otherwise, with his afternoon highlighted by one- and four-yard touchdown passes to Michael Pittman and Mo Alie-Cox, respectively. Ehlinger gained valuable experience this season while drawing his first three NFL starts and making four appearances overall, and he'll enter the offseason as the primary (and latest) candidate to try and bring some long-awaited stability to the Colts' quarterback position come 2023.
